The Paris Picture That Took a Year
Despite its spontaneous impression, Albert Edelfelt worked on the painting for more than a year, both outdoors and in the studio. It became his only large-scale Paris scene and was shown in May 1887, where it received a warm reception from critics.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting The Luxembourg Gardens by Albert Edelfelt from the year 1887.

The work depicts a scene from the beloved public garden in Paris which was a popular spot for both locals and tourists as early as the 1800s. In the painting we see a woman holding a little girl, and behind them both adults and children walking and playing in the garden.

Edelfelt (1854-1905) was a famous Finnish-Swedish artist with an incredible ability to capture light and movement. Edelfelt made preliminary studies for the painting in April 1886, and began the painting that same summer in Paris and Haiko. A year later, in 1887, he completed the painting in Paris.

Artist: Albert Edelfelt | Created: 1887.
