From a Series of Paintings to a Fairy-Tale Book
This was originally part of a series of twelve paintings, not a book illustration. Kittelsen painted the Soria Moria series at his home, Lauvlia, in 1900; it was exhibited in Kristiania that same year and bought by the National Gallery. The motifs were not published in fairy-tale form until 1911.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a painting "The Princess Shines the Troll" from 1900 by Theodor Kittelsen who was a Norwegian artist. 

The painting depicts a mysterious scene where the princess sits on a chair in a dark room and brushes the troll's hair. The large, shadowy figures of the troll appear in contrast to the light from the window, creating a magical and mysterious atmosphere.

Theodor Kittelsen (1857–1914) was a Norwegian artist, best known for his illustrations and paintings with a strong element of nature and Nordic folklore. He is famous for his depictions of goblins, fairies and other mythological creatures. Kittelsen had a special talent for capturing the dark and fairy-tale in nature, which made his work both fascinating and terrifying.
