The story behind the motif
Canvas with a beautiful painting created in 1870 by Auguste Renoir - a French painter and sculptor. The painting The Promenade is partly a tribute to artists Renoir greatly admired.
Renoir had spent the previous summer painting with Claude Monet, who encouraged him to move towards a lighter, more luminous palette. He chose the painting's subject with inspiration from the sensual, light-hearted garden excursions of nineteenth-century painters such as Jean-Antoine Watteau and Jean-Honoré Fragonard - whose work Renoir had studied in the Louvre.
In the years 1860-1861, Renoir studied art in Charles Gleyre's studio and in 1862 he started at the École des Beaux-Arts art school. At school he got to know Claude Monet, Frédéric Bazille and Alfred Sisley.
