The Title Came Later
We do not know what Renoir himself called the painting. The name The Promenade was given by a later owner, not by the artist. The title that now seems self-evident is therefore part of the work’s afterlife. It also directs the viewer toward the elegant excursion scenes of the eighteenth century, even though Renoir’s original title has been lost.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with a beautiful painting created in 1870 by Auguste Renoir - a French painter and sculptor. The painting The Promenade is partly a tribute to artists Renoir greatly admired.

Renoir had spent the previous summer painting with Claude Monet, who encouraged him to move towards a lighter, more luminous palette. He chose the painting's subject with inspiration from the sensual, light-hearted garden excursions of nineteenth-century painters such as Jean-Antoine Watteau and Jean-Honoré Fragonard - whose work Renoir had studied in the Louvre.

In the years 1860-1861, Renoir studied art in Charles Gleyre's studio and in 1862 he started at the École des Beaux-Arts art school. At school he got to know Claude Monet, Frédéric Bazille and Alfred Sisley.

Artist: Auguste Renoir | Created: 1870.
