A Fleet on a One-Way Journey
The print functioned almost as a farewell image: the fleet left New Bedford in November 1861 to be deliberately sunk. On 19 December, the ageing whaling vessels were filled with stone and sunk at the entrance to Charleston harbour, in the Union’s attempt to close the route to Confederate blockade runners.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting The Stone Fleet by L. Prang & Co. from the year 1862.

The painting depicts a fleet of sailing ships that constituted Stone Fleet, a group of old merchant ships sent away during the American Civil War. These ships were used to block ports and impede enemy shipping, and were an important part of naval warfare strategies during this time.

L. Prang & Co. was a printing and lithographic company based in Boston and active during the 1800s. They were known for producing color prints and lithographs depicting both historical and contemporary scenes, often with maritime themes.

Artist: L. Prang & Co. | Created: 1862.
