When Menton Became French
The view is of Menton, a town that officially became French on 2 February 1861—just one year before the painting was made. Augustus Leopold Egg thus captured the place at a moment when its borders had only recently been redrawn, after Menton’s long association with Monaco.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring the painting The Traveling Companions from 1862. The painting was created by Augustus Leopold Egg, who was a Victorian artist.

This painting creates a fascination, among other things, through its mirror image of identically dressed women. The women sit together in a cramped train compartment, from where you can look out over the sunlit coast near Meudon in southern France. One girl is resting and the other is reading from a book.

Egg was a member of The Clique - a group of artists formed by, among others, Richard Dadd in the late 1830s. Together with his friend Charles Dickens, he set up the "Guild of Literature and Art" - a philanthropic organization that sought to meet the financial needs of struggling artists and writers.

Artist: Augustus Leopold Egg | Created: 1862.
