A Fisherman Became a Brand
Tiedemannsfiskeren became more than an advertising image: the figure was based on an older photograph of Hans Peter Jacobsen Wiggen, who died as early as 1899. When Tiedemanns tobacco used the familiar coastal figure in its advertising, a photographic portrait acquired an unusually long afterlife as a Norwegian brand symbol.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage photograph "The Tiedemann Fisherman" taken in 1910 by Anders Beer Wilse, one who was a Norwegian photographer known for his documentation of Norwegian landscape, everyday life and culture around the turn of the century. 

The photograph was used in advertising for Tiedemann Tobacco. The picture depicts an elderly fisherman sitting on a wooden porch. He is dressed in Southwestern, rough boots and worn work clothes and has a pipe in his mouth. The environment with barrels, wooden walls and a harbor-like background reinforces the maritime and robust impression.

The photograph combines documentary realism with the advertising's purpose of associating the tobacco brand with authenticity and Norwegian coastal life.
