Not a Standalone Life Lesson
The quotation was not intended as a standalone life lesson. Wilde wrote it in 1891 in the essay The Soul of Man under Socialism, amid an attack on a society in which people consume their lives collecting possessions and the symbols of them. For him, “to live” was an argument for radical individualism.
