Falero himself dated the sheet “Paris 1881” in the signature—a precision lost in the Met’s broad catalogue dating of 1851–96. Six years later, the watercolour entered the museum through Catharine Lorillard Wolfe’s bequest.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Twin Stars by Luis Falero from 1851. Falero was a Spanish painter specializing in nude women, myths, witches and fantasy.

During the 19th century, interest in Old Norse history and mythology grew in Northern Europe, which became an alternative to classical Greek and Roman. In this arresting painting, we see several naked figures in pairs, each figure having an associated star.
