Three Versions in the Same Year
In 1896, Munch made not only the painting but also a charcoal sketch and a pencil drawing of the same composition. The oil painting is also unsigned – a small reminder that the work was not necessarily intended as a solitary, final version, but formed part of an ongoing artistic process.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a painting by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch from 1896.

The painting depicts a young woman standing at a sink washing herself in a simple room. Munch uses muted colors and soft brushstrokes to capture the feeling of intimacy and stillness.

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was a Norwegian artist and one of the most influential figures in modern art. He is best known for his dramatic paintings that reflect anxiety, death, loneliness, and human existence. His work had a profound impact on both Symbolism and Expressionism, and his works continue to be both beloved and debated around the world.
