When the image carried the knowledge
The plate comes from the second edition of Svenska fåglar, published in parts from 1917 to 1929. Its model was the von Wright brothers’ nineteenth-century work with 184 hand-coloured lithographs and no explanatory text. The precision of the image was therefore not decoration – it was the bird book itself.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage poster of a barred owl . The illustration was drawn by the von Wright brothers and published at the beginning of the 20th century in the book Swedish Birds After Nature Och På Sten Ritad. In the picture we see, among other things, the text Strix Uralensis - Latin for Slag Owl .
