The Victory Decided by a Shoulder
In 1928, Per-Erik “Särna” Hedlund and Sven Utterström crossed the finish line arm in arm after agreeing to a dead heat. The officials nevertheless declared Hedlund the winner, because his shoulder crossed the line first. The two skiing stars never returned to the Vasaloppet.

The story behind the motif

Poster with vintage photograph of the Vasaloppet in 1926. In the picture we see Per-Erik Hedlund (1897-1975), competing for Malungs IF.

Hedlund wins the Vasaloppet in a time of 5 hours 36 minutes. Crown winner Aina Pers puts the victory wreath around Hedlund's neck just before the finish line. Per-Erik Hedlund, nicknamed Särna, was an outstanding skier who won gold in the 50 km at the 1928 Sankt Moritz Olympics.
