The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting " Water" by the Italian Renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527-1593), who is known for his imaginative portraits in which he uses objects such as fruit, flowers and books to recreate faces.
The painting "Water" is part of Arcimboldo's series "The Elements" and shows a woman's face composed of a variety of aquatic creatures such as fish, crustaceans and shells. The painting was made in 1566.
Giuseppe Arcimboldo was born in Milan and worked in Italy and Austria, where he was part of the imperial court under Emperor Maximilian II. His artwork reflected the Renaissance interest in natural science, botany, and zoology, and his detailed depictions of nature were part of the scientific developments of this period.
