The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Wild Tulip by William Morris from 1884. The dense pattern lets tulips and stylized carnations or peonies wind through a continuous vegetal ornament. The design belongs to Morris’s later work and has a clearer, more graphic rhythm than several of his early wallpapers.
William Morris (1834–1896), a leading figure in the English Arts and Crafts movement, drew inspiration from both nature and older decorative traditions. The Met particularly highlights the influence of 17th-century Turkish brocades in Wild Tulip. This is an important part of the explanation for why Morris’s expression feels so rich: English garden forms meet historic pattern language from other cultures.
