A Name with Several Lives
The artist behind the painting appears in collection records both as Alice Maude Taite Fanner and Alice Maud Fanner, but these are the same painter. Birmingham Museums date the work to 1912–13—a clarification easily lost when the image is circulated as a reproduction.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring the beautiful painting Yacht Racing In The Solent created in 1913. The painting is by British landscape painter Alice Maude Taite Fanner.

Alice Maude Taite Fanner was a student of Albert Julius Olsson , and like Olsson, Fanner often painted the sea and the coast. Many of her paintings are of yachts and sailing scenes - as we see, among other things, in this fantastic painting of a Yacht race.

The painting takes place at The Solent , which is a strait in Great Britain that separates the Isle of Wight from the British mainland. The strait is heavily trafficked by shipping, both military and civilian, and is a popular recreation area.

Artist: Alice Maude Taite Fanner | Created: 1913.
