An ending was rewritten
In Hermann Sudermann’s 1893 play, Magda leaves her home town once again, disillusioned after meeting her father. When the story became a film in 1938, the ending was changed: her return instead culminated in reconciliation. The small rewrite says much about how powerfully family, homeland and reconciliation resonated in German cinema of the period.

The story behind the motif

Movie poster for Tilbaka till Hemmet, a film from 1938 with Swedish Zarah Leander, one of the most iconic figures in film history and known as "the last diva: famous, infamous and worshiped like few".

The film takes place in 1885, where the famous singer Magda von Schwartze returns to her German hometown to perform the Matthew Passion and seek reconciliation with her father. But a hidden secret threatens to disrupt her plans.

Zarah Leander, Germany's biggest film star before and during World War II and later a famous international singer, was known for her contralto voice and lively gestures.

This movie poster is a perfect tribute to 'the last diva', a symbol of fame and controversy, and an ideal addition for fans and collectors.

Please note that the images are cropped slightly differently depending on the size you choose. Read more about image and image quality here: FAQ .
